Tara - one of our qualified plumbers 18 April 2019 Tara - one of our qualified plumbers

WHEN Tara Rimmer was just eight-years-old she enjoyed helping her family renovate an old cottage and her love of the building trade was born.

Almost 20 years on, Tara is a qualified plumber, having worked in the trade with LHP in Grimsby for seven years. She is now encouraging other girls to break the stereotype and try their hands at professions that remain traditionally male-dominated.

“It was my stepdad Geoff Dalton, who spotted that I had the skills to learn a trade. We had the cottage in North Somercotes and from as young as eight or nine, I would help to mix the cement and be allowed to do bits and bobs,” recalled Tara.

Following her GCSEs at the then Birkbeck School – now Somercotes Academy – Tara began her A-level studies in Law, Psychology, and Fine Art and Photography.

“I really didn’t know what I wanted to do and that can be stressful for any young person. It was my stepdad who then suggested that I try this, but I initially turned around and said, ‘It’s a bloke’s job’,” said Tara.

However, she decided to give it a go and enrolled on a course at the Grimsby Institute gaining qualifications in construction and specialising in plumbing. She has now worked with the team at LHP for seven years, following the successful completion of an apprenticeship.

Giving special thanks to her LHP mentor Richard Drewell, Tara said: “No girl should ever be afraid to go into a trade and they should not think that it is daunting at all. The team here has been great and that really helps.

“I work on empty properties that need doing-up and when you turn around and see what you have achieved at the end, it is so satisfying – that’s what I love about it,” added Tara.
Tara is part of our newly-expanded LHP in-house maintenance and repairs team, now responsible for carrying out all responsive and electrical repairs, heating servicing, general maintenance, empty property refurbishment, alongside an emergency service.
