UK Savings Week 2026: Small steps can make a big difference
Save your way today, thank yourself tomorrow
Around 14 million people in the UK have less than £100 in savings and around 1 in 10 people have no savings at all.
UK Savings Week (21-27 September 2026) is a national campaign led by the Building Societies Association (BSA) the trade body of UK building societies and seven large credit unions to encourage people to think about saving and building financial resilience, whatever their circumstances. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the benefits of saving and support people to develop positive saving habits.
Why saving matters
Having some money set aside can help provide:
- A safety net for unexpected expenses
- Greater financial security and peace of mind
- More flexibility when life changes
- The opportunity to work towards personal goals, however big or small
- Increased confidence in managing money
Even small amounts can add up over time, and regular saving can help people feel more prepared for the future.
Steps to positive savings attitudes
Whether it’s taking the first small steps or looking to build towards a savings goal, UK Savings Week is all about getting people thinking about savings and encouraging better saving habits.
If you’re in a position to save, even a little can make a difference:
- Pay off your debts first. If you have any debt it is usually better to pay this off first before you start saving. Organisations such as Stepchange can help
- Start small. Some savings accounts can be opened with as little as £1.
- Set a realistic savings goal. Make your savings goals achievable and specific, not general. Instead of saying “I’m going to save for the future” say “save £3000 to buy a car by the end of next year”
- Put aside money regularly, even if it’s only a few pounds at a time.
- Consider setting up an automatic transfer on payday.
- Review subscriptions and everyday spending to identify small savings.
- Compare savings accounts to make sure you’re getting the best available interest rate.
It’s OK if you’re not ready to save
Many people are struggling to make ends meet, especially at the moment. You might not be in a position to start your savings journey and that’s OK. For some households, covering essential bills and day-to-day expenses must come first.
Financial wellbeing isn’t about how much you have in savings. It’s about making the choices that are right for your circumstances. Whether you’re saving regularly, managing on a tight budget, or simply looking for ways to make your money go further, taking positive steps when you can is what matters.
Money saving tips:
