Preparation For Demolition Begins

Preparations for the demolition of Immingham’s low-rise housing blocks will begin on Tuesday 28 August 2018 marking the start of a new era for the north Lincolnshire town.

Work will begin on the first phase of demolition to bring down six blocks of accommodation comprising 36 properties on the Washdyke Estate.

Blocks to be demolished are: Laceby House, Barnoldby House, Weelsby House, Hawerby House, Brigsley House and Great Coates House. Along with the garages located off Park Close.

Split into two phases, the controlled demolition will be carried out by experienced specialists DSM Demolition Ltd – who are currently carrying out the successful demolition of the East Marsh high-rise blocks.

LHP director of property Mark Jones said: “This will be very emotional for those that have lived or grown up here but as well as dealing with areas of unpopular housing and tackling properties that are hard to let, it will mark a visual difference to the centre of the town and present a genuine opportunity to transform this central area of Immingham.”

Following very extensive public consultation, plans for the demolition of 13 blocks were announced last year.

All affected residents were offered rehousing, home-loss payments, variable disturbance payments and provided with a designated relocation support officer to assist in their rehousing.

Not only were the results of the public consultation considered but also the declining demand for this type of accommodation, high tenancy turnover, outdated accommodation in need of modernisation, the impact of the government’s welfare reforms and the opportunity for much needed area regeneration.

This first phase of demolition is expected to be completed by mid-February 2019.

Please remember:

  • Buildings waiting for demolition are unsafe.
  • Residents should not enter any of the properties at any time.
  • Residents should not allow their children to play in or around these buildings.
  • Heavy machinery will be on site and this is very dangerous.
  • Residents should keep at a safe distance away from the works at all times.

LHP are currently carrying out feasibility studies to examine the potential opportunities to transform the area into a modern housing scheme providing a mix of affordable rental, shared and home ownership homes.

Both LHP and the demolition contractor will be holding a drop-in event between 3pm and 6pm on Tuesday 28 August 2018 at Immingham Civic Library should any residents or local businesses have any questions or concerns.

While preparation work will begin on the Tuesday, a visual change may not take place until four weeks later.
